Google OS

Last night Google announced its soon to be released Google Chrome operating system. Google's web optimized operating system will be a Linux based lightweight OS targeted initially at netbooks and users who spend most of their time accessing applications through the internet. Google expects netbooks leveraging its operating system to go on sale in the first half of 2010.

Google's new operating system builds on a suite of web based productivity applications, Google Apps, Gmail, Google Docs, and a plethora of additional applications (BitWare Technologies is a Google Apps Premier reseller). The addition of an operating system places Google in a position to directly compete with Microsoft and Apple in the netbook and desktop market. Given that the Google operating system is open source and Linux based, it is likely that Google will leverage the community to develop applications and expand the functionality of their product creating an exciting opportunity for the open source community to get involved on a large scale.
